Fontana, California is in California’s Inland Empire region, along historic Route 66. Fifty miles from Los Angeles, Fontana offers proximity to the city combined with the convenience of small-town life and several cultural activities.
Known as the “City of Action,” Fontana was historically known for its drag racing strip, Fontana Drag City. Although the old drag strip has been closed for some years, the Auto Club Speedway, which hosts NASCAR races, is now a fixture of the city.
Fontana boasts the largest library in the San Bernardino County system, the Lewis Library and Technology Center, which opened in 2008. The Lewis Library is a wonderful asset to the community, offering historical documents, a computer training center and a literacy center including tutoring programs.
Near the Lewis Library is the Center Stage Theater, a recently renovated, historic Art Deco theater. The Center Stage Theater offers live performances. The Steelworkers’ Auditorium is next door to the Center Stage Theater and provides art-related classes and seminars for the public.
Fontana has a hot, arid climate, with highs in the summer typically reaching the upper 90s and relatively little rainfall. The hot, dry Santa Ana winds which blow from the nearby Mojave Desert tend to affect the city in the fall.
The economy is largely industrial. Because Interstate 10 and Interstate 15 both pass through Fontana, the city is well situated to house several trucking-based businesses.
